Notes: "Map 161." This map presents an "upside-down" view of the world. "No apologies are called for in presenting this map with south at the top. The convention of "north-up" was established a few centuries ago because of the use, by northern hemisphere navigators and surveyors, of the northern polar star "Polaris" and the magnetic compass. Indeed, in earlier times east was placed at the top of maps and this was the origin of the term "Orientation". After hundreds of years of development, southern lands have no reason to be "below" the northern hemisphere countries."
